Inter-neighborhood Meeting TONIGHT
In our efforts to coordinate better with nearby neighborhoods, we’re having a meeting of neighborhood reps tonight at Ashford Club starting at 7:00. If you’d like to come, you would be more than welcome.
In our efforts to coordinate better with nearby neighborhoods, we’re having a meeting of neighborhood reps tonight at Ashford Club starting at 7:00. If you’d like to come, you would be more than welcome. I don’t know who exactly is going to show up from other neighborhoods but I feel sure about Glendale and Lafayette Park, pretty good about Los Robles and not so sure about Durward, Betton Oaks, Waverly, and Brookwood.
The main speaker, Piers Rawling is Myers Park NA president. he’ll talk mainly about his experiences dealing with the park parcel rezoning, its history, what steps they took to organize, etc. He’s a good talker. I’d also like for us to have some time for getting to know the other neigbhorhood reps, what they see as their issues, etc.
Probably go an hour to 1.5 hours. Coffee (reg and decaf) and brownies.
And now the warning . . . from a friend of mine:
The City of Tallahassee is proposing to sell land on N Macomb Street directly across from the Renaissance Center to a developer to build a 5 acre 900+ student housing complex and parking garage. This would also take over the property where Strong and Jones is located on Copeland St.
Here’s a link to a page with information: https://www.facebook.com/frenchtownpreservation/
This student housing in the heart of Frenchtown will destroy the character of the community! It is in direct contradiction to a number of revitalization plans already on the books. We are asking neighborhoods to stand together! There will soon be a community meeting, in the meantime, sign the petition, E-mail/call City Commissions, share this information!
Frenchtown has certainly had its share of issues. Still, there is a very strong contingent of people there that want to preserve and strengthen its cultural and historical uniqueness. Student housing and its associated retail would destroy that worthwhile intention. I can’t believe the city would go along with stabbing a dagger into the heart of Frenchtown. You gotta give the city government credit; they do have an ability to shock and amaze and dismay.
