Become A Mentor at One of Our Partner Schools
A new academic year is underway and this would be a perfect time to begin volunteering as a mentor at one of our partner schools. Instructions for becoming a mentor are provided on this website and in this news update.
There are quite a few dates and times for new mentor training in September. All training sessions are in Portable #3 at the district offices, 2757 West Pensacola Street. A volunteer needs to sign up for only one training session. A new mentor should take the following steps:
- Go to leonschools.net
- Click Departments
- Click V-Volunteers
- Click Volunteer Application Form (bottom right-hand of page)
- Complete and submit the application form
- Click Sign Up to register for a specific training date and time
After a volunteer is trained, he/she must be fingerprinted for the background check. Fingerprinting is done at the district offices. It generally takes 2-3 weeks for everything to be processed after fingerprinting is complete. At that time, the district sends the volunteer’s ID badge to the mentor contact for the school. That person contacts the volunteer mentor to make a match with a specific student and develop a mentoring schedule. If you have questions, Meg Guyton (one of our BHNA neighbors!) is the mentor contact for Kate Sullivan Elementary School and would be happy to give you assistance. Her email is MegHGuyton@comcast.net. Thank you for your attention to this opportunity!!
