Opportunity to Donate to Hurricane Devastated Communities
Children’s Communication Center (CCC) led by Lori Grayson, Betton Hills resident, is proud to announce their #LittleOnesRock #BeStrong campaign. This is an extension of the #LittleOnesRock #BeRocks and Little Free Library (LFL) efforts which will now focus on supporting our neighboring communities affected by Hurricane Michael.
The primary request is for books. However, personal hygiene items, and other daily essentials will be accepted at the BHNA Fall Festival. This article presents things to contribute.
Background
This Center dedicated our Little Ones Rock Little Free Library Trio in 2017 at Winthrop Park’s playground allowing those who visit to “Share a Book & Borrow a Book”. Why? Because language development is the foundation for literacy and learning and establishing a stronger language foundation culminates with our little ones experiencing success in school, academics, and life.
Our #LittleOnesRock #BeRocks from #AtoZ campaign began in 2017 in an effort to create a smooth transition from summer to school for our community by offering a family friendly language and literacy-based outdoor activity. The #BeRocks express concepts that fill our little ones with inspiration, positive thinking, encouragement, and imagination. The Center has shared approximately 2000 rocks this past year through community events.
Responding to Hurricane Michael
Now, it is time for our #LittleOnesRock #BeStrong campaign with a focus on the children and families affected by Hurricane Michael.
First Priority: Books, etc.
At this time, we know that many of the children and teens are without items of comfort or activities during the day. Just as with our Little Ones Rock LFLs we are eager to collect gently used or new board books, early readers, chapter books, classics, books of interest to teens and young adults, as well as, books for parents and caregivers.
In addition, CCC created an Amazon Wish List, Hurricane Michael Wish List & Children’s Communication Center, to suggest items: Blank journal/art books, colored pencils, crayons, language and theme-based coloring books, spiral notebooks, 4-way colored pens, highlighters, fleece soft blankets, and backpacks to fill for the recipients.
The Wish List items will ship directly to the CCC, or you can shop locally and bring your donations to the BHNA Fall Festival this Sunday, October 28th! If you are unable to attend the event, please call to arrange drop off.
Also Accepted: Family Items
When recovery and relief began, CCC paired with several local relief groups collecting essential items for little ones to teens and their families and this continues. Suggestions include: Formula, pacifiers, diapers, wipes, toilet paper, paper towels, cool weather clothes, hygiene products, laundry detergent, tissues etc.
If you decide you no longer need your Hurricane food and safety supplies, those can be donated to CCC or other Tallahassee organizations involved in the relief and recovery efforts.
In an effort to increase awareness and visibility of this campaign, please use our #LittleOnesRock #BeStrong hashtags and tag us @childrenscommunication on Facebook and Instagram.
