Betton Hills Neighborhood Association will be celebrating Arbor Day this Saturday, January 29 from 9am – 11am at McCord Park. Park in the Armistead Road parking area and look for the information table.
We have a lot to do in two hours so please join us and bring your friends!
Come a few minutes early for hot coffee and homemade cinnamon buns (made by Jody Walthall). We will also have hot chocolate. The weather promises to be cold but sunny.
We will be planting 2 more native trees in the Armistead woodland – a white oak and a swamp chestnut oak. Two spruce pines will also be planted in Chittenten Park on Spruce Avenue.
We will be replacing one bluebird nest box which was vandalized. The others three bluebird houses and the two wood duck boxes will be cleaned out in preparation of the upcoming nesting season. We will also spread pine straw mulch around previously planted trees. One couple usually brings their canoe for pond litter cleanup.
As we do every year, we will continue to remove invasive plants such as coral ardisia, privet and tree Ligustrum from the park. This year we will concentrate our efforts in the woodland between the pond and Thomasville Road (near the big lizard). There is a lot to do here so we hope you will join the effort!
It should be a fun and rewarding morning. We will meet no matter how cold but will cancel if raining. Bring garden gloves, shovel, mattock, pruners, loppers. We will have some extra tools if you do not have your own. There are chores for all ages and strengths. Children welcome, teenagers encouraged!
