McCord Park Invasive Plants Removal

This event has ended

We had a productive two-hour work session with 18 ESP (Environmental Service Program) students from FSU and 6 Betton Hills Neighborhood Association members on a gorgeous Saturday morning in October. We worked in the woodland between the pond and the houses along Armistead Road, removing privet, ardisia, skunk vine, Asiatic jasmine and other invasives that are growing at the bases of the trees in this urban forest. The City of Tallahassee mows this area a few times each year, which prevents invasive plants from dominating the woodland, but the mowers cannot get in close to the trees. That was our job. We also removed quite a few medium sized camphor trees and mimosa trees.

Thanks to the following neighbors: Donna Legare, Jody Walthall, Ross Ellington, Kris Ellington, Scott Ellington, Jennifer Butler. And a big thank you to our student volunteers: Meghan Hunt, Catalina Llanos, Ailin Cano, Kaitlyn Everist, Samara Brooks, Laura Gazioni, Wesley Muldoon, Jacob Javor, Nicholas George, Colby Jacobs, Justin Milledge, Nia Ogletree, Owen Jackson,
Megan Foster, Emily Dillon, Joshua Castillo, Sharon Mazariegos, Emilie Widarsson.

Special thanks to Jody Walthall for the delicious homemade cinnamon rolls served warm!

The FSU Environmental Service Program will be helping remove invasive plants at McCord Park for the third time since last fall. We plan to work in the woodland between the pond and the houses along Armistead Road, removing privet, ardisia, skunk vine and other invasives that are growing at the bases of the trees in this urban forest. The City of Tallahassee mows this area a few times each year, which prevents invasive plants from dominating the woodland, but the mowers cannot get in close to the trees. That will be our job.

If you plan to join us, please bring loppers, pruners. shovels and work gloves if you have them. Also bring your own water bottle. It is always fun to work with an enthusiastic group of young people. Call or text Donna Legare at 850 386-1148 for more information.
