Garbage collection in Betton Hills is managed by the City of Tallahassee Utilities. Trash collection occurs every Friday. Large trash pickup occurs every other Thursday (Betton Hills is picked up on RED week).

Tips for being a good neighbor

  • Put cardboard boxes in recycling rather than trash bins. Please break down boxes before putting them in recycling.
  • Do not place bulky items or yard waste out too long before large trash pickup (Thursdays on RED week).
  • Ensure that remodeling contractors haul their waste in a timely fashion. It is the contractor’s responsibility to haul away anything pulled from your house as part of the remodeling job. Make sure that this is in the contract. If you are doing your own own remodeling, plan on hauling the waste to the Marpan Recycling Center (or the landfill, but we prefer that you recycle it if possible).
    • Also consider recycling old but functional appliances, fixtures, and other household building materials to Tallahassee Habitat for Humanity Restore. Donations are tax-deductible, and you are helping a great cause (not to mention keeping items out of the landfill).
  • Do not put hazardous waste in recycling or trash bins. See below for tips on how to recycle hazardous waste
    • Tip: Best Buy on Apalachee Parkway also accepts and will recycle old electronics and batteries.

Hazardous Waste

What is hazardous?

Hazardous waste includes any of the following types of trash:

  • electronics, including TVs, computers, and small appliances
  • batteries
  • paint

How can I dispose of hazardous waste?

There are several options for disposing of hazardous waste:

  • You can take these items to the hazardous waste facility at 7550 Apalachee Parkway.
  • On the first Saturday of every month from 9am – 1pm from September to May, you can drop hazardous waste off at the Leon Public Works Operations Center at 2280 Miccosukee Road.
  • Some retailers, such as Best Buy on Apalachee Parkway, accept small appliances, batteries, and cellphones for recycling.
  • You can request a special electronic waste pickup from the City of Tallahassee Utilities.

Tips for recycling

  • DO NOT BAG recycling. Put it straight into the bins.
  • DO NOT put any food waste, hazardous material, plastic bags, shredded paper or Styrofoam into recycling bins
    • Tip: Publix accepts Styrofoam egg cartons and plastic bags. You cannot recycle these in your recycling bin, but you can drop them into any green bin outside of any Publix.
